i like it when you sand
This is a story of my surrendered to sand.
One day I got a call from Zuzana from the Ji.hlava festival whether I want to do this photoshoot of art opening and exposition. For me it’s kinda hard to say no to these photoshoots because I am always curious. Well, not always but I know that people around Inspiration forum of Ji.hlava are fun to work with.

On the opening night I did my thing, I took the photos of the exhibition and I joined few of the artists for dinner. We discussed the topic they picked but the most visually intriguing piece for me was this “i like it when you sand”. If there is a fanclub of obsidian with concrete combination I want in, because you see, I wanted to take descriptive pictures of the exhibition and leave. But I gotta say I am obsessed with obsidian combination with concrete from now on. I took most of the photos with flash head on and I hated how the black obsidian absorbs the light so its almost without any structure on the photo. The glass and concrete was too bright and gives a lot of undesired reflection. I went into a battle that most product photographers know very well. Like the obsidian takes in all the emitted light I also took in the fact that I need to work with the material, not agains it. I was at the mercy of sand. You can’t fight sand Luke!

I’ll make a confession here. I thrive on difficult conditions. It pushes me to do better. The key part here and thats what I have learnt in the past few years is to be prepared. If you listen to professional artists or athletes there is always a talk about how repetition and spending enough hours doing what they love is THE KEY. All the success stories are basically screaming “just do it” and the success will come. Then we take those success working your assoff stories, we destill it, polish it, we chop the fat. Aaan voila! It’s that simple! Just a 15 minutes of movement everyday. Just one tablet of vitamins per day! Just spend some time in nature. Just love yourself. Just tell me in one sentence what SAND is!
I may have gone a little bit out of topic here but stay with me. My observation is that we need to simplify things in order to communicate and to save some energy. We are naturaly wired to be interested and curious but if THE THING exceeds certain level of complexity skip it or oversimplify it.
Thats brings me back to this piece of art. It makes complicated things like SAND more understandable. Not with spreadsheets, chemical formulas or complex taxonomy. Nope. Look its right there. This is sand. But this is also sand. Its also a instalation, glass, concerte, rock, pixels in picture, light, cold, microchips,…
I make photos to describe and to make you feel. Thats why I started to post it on blog. I know it’s a lot to ask these days but I urge you to open this site on larger screen instead of your phone and spend sime time with the photos. Observe it with curiosity or maybe without any goal. Make yourself comfortable to be able to absorb it, make yourself tuned to whatever you feel. What do you know, maybe you are SAND too?
